Changes of State

This week we carried out an investigation where we thought about the changes different materials go through when immersed in water. We soaked beads overnight in water and when we came to school the next day they had absorbed the water and had expanded! We realised that this was an irreversible change as the beads will not go back to their original state. We loved this investigation and enjoyed trading our beads with each other to makes lots of lovely patterns too!











Science Week

We have had a fantastic time this week participating in lots of hands on Science Activities! Here are some pictures of us enjoying the Sky Dome (where we watched a video about Space) and our exciting Matter Matters workshop.

Suspense and Mystery Drama

In English, we have been learning about suspense and mystery texts. For one of our activities, we came up with our own suspense and mystery dramas. We thought of our story lines, chose a setting for our drama and also acted along to creepy music to build suspense throughout our performances! Take a look at some pictures of us in action.

This week we have been using our computing skills to create movie trailers.

We had to think about our script, learn about different ranges and how to edit.

We had so much fun using imovie and some of us have even used our newly learnt skills to create our own home movies.

Qatar Artwork

This week we have been discussing the different landscapes we have come across when travelling throughout Qatar. We then decided to paint a landscape of a dhow boat travelling in the sea with West Bay in the background. We carefully chose the colours that we wanted to use and used blending techniques to create an ombre effect. We are very proud of our paintings!

Financial Literacy.

This week in Maths we have been learning about 'Financial Literacy.'

Why teach personal finance education?

All children are entitled to learn the attitudes, skills, and knowledge that will prepare them for the economic reality of their lives now and in the future. Recent research has revealed that children are dealing with money matters at an early age. (Research is England based, and some aspects may not be relevant or true in Qatar)
• Children as young as seven will offer to do chores to boost their spending power. By comparison, most parents didn’t work for money until they were ten.

• The average eight year old already has a mobile phone.

• By the time they are ten, children are likely to be shopping online using their parents’ credit or debit cards.

• Children now have greater spending power than ever before, with average weekly pocket money totalling £6.32, compared with £3.77 for their parents and £2.38 for grandparents in the equivalent of today’s money.

The evidence is clear. Children, like adults, are faced with a host of choices about money. Personal finance education aims to provide children with the ability to make sound decisions in their everyday lives, and to grow into adults who know how to keep track of their finances, plan ahead, spend wisely and confidently negotiate the world of finance.

In Year 5 we have focussed on Budgeting skills; how to budget for a day out, how to budget for school resources and how to balance income and spending. Many understood that ideally spending should not be more than income.

Here we are tackling our learning; the children had to show many attributes of the DBS Learner Profile for these challenges.
